When beautiful Lizzie Payton showed up in Shooter's Cross with the magnificent black stallion Satan, Sam Blaylock's friend Duane Beatty fell for her - hard. What Duane didn't know was that Lizzie had trouble dogging her trail, trouble that would put Duane and all his friends on Rancho Diablo in danger and wind up in a blistering shootout in the streets of Shooter's Cross!
DARK HORSE is the rapid-fire fifth installment in the saga of Sam Blaylock and his friends and family as they try to make a home for themselves and carve an empire out of the wilds of frontier Texas.
RANCHO DIABLO is created and written by best-selling, award-winning novelists Mel Odom, Bill Crider, and James Reasoner.
Dark Horse Rancho Diablo Book 5 edition by Colby Jackson James Reasoner Bill Crider Mel Odom Literature Fiction eBooks
This fifth entry in the popular Rancho Diablo series maintains the high standards set by previous titles and continues the promise of more to come. As most everyone knows, these books are written in a sort of round-robin style by Bill Crider, James Reasoner, and Mel Odum. This time out it is the always-dependable Reasoner taking another turn and, as already indicated, he does not disappoint. The arrival in Shooters Cross of a beautiful blonde young woman leading a beautiful (albeit in quite a different way) black stallion draws a lot of attention right off the bat, none more intense than from young Duane Beatty, a hired hand at Sam Blaylock's Rancho Diablo ranch, who happens to be in town that day getting supplies. And, as luck would have it, the opportunity for the young cowpoke to do more than just gaze longingly after the lovely stranger soon presents itself when the blonde beauty is accosted by three hard cases in the local livery and Duane is on hand to intervene.
From there the momentum of the story picks up steadily as it turns out that the blonde -- whose name is Lizzie Payton -- has plenty of trouble on her lovely tail and getting involved with her may not turn out to be so lucky (unless you count the bad kind) for Duane after all. But Duane, having ridden with Sam Blaylock for a lot of years and having been in on the building of Rancho Diablo from the beginning, is no stranger to trouble. Same for Sam and the other Rancho Diablo riders. And once it is clear how Lizzie has been wronged and how much danger she is in, Duane and the others are ready to back her all the way.
There's action aplenty, a handful of subplots complete with a twist or two, a colorful cast of characters including the kind of villain you love to hate and his assortment of henchmen, a taste of sweet romance, and an exciting horse race featuring Lizzie's "Satan", the dark horse of the title ... all presented in Reasoner's easy, assured writing style.
Lots to like. Leaves you sorry to reach the last page and anxious for the next installment of the Rancho Diablo series.
Strongly recommended.

Dark Horse Rancho Diablo Book 5 edition by Colby Jackson James Reasoner Bill Crider Mel Odom Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is a great series, great story and a fast read.i really like the serial aspect of it,with a new one every few months.
Colby Jackson writes wonderfully about this family and area! Read all of his books in this series! they are all good!
Great series Rancho Diablo is a great value and the books are short enough that there isn't a lot of rambling from the author they a well written series.
This was a very good book, for the price you can't beat it, this was a hard book to put down, couldn't wait to get back to it, there has only been one of Colby Jackson Book's, that I wished I hadn't wasted my money on, but this wasn't the one.
Enjoyed this book
It's no secret who the writers are of this series. This time around it's James Reasoner and he doesn't disappoint. Though I've only read a fraction of his many novels, I have yet to read a bad one.
The story here is a young woman and her horse that shows up in Shooter's Cross. Duane Beatty was the sort who falls in love with every pretty girl he sees and sometimes can be a trial to his boss and friend Sam Blaylock, owner of Rancho Diablo. As much family as friend and hand, one always backed family.
And so when the beautiful Lizzie Payton and her stallion, Satan, come to town, trouble follows her and the folks of Rancho Diablo come together as always.
Recommended.
Have read all the books in this series so far except the one about Gabby, I skipped it. This one brings in another Rancho Diablo person, Duane. He is easy going, plays guitar but tough in a fight. I won't go into detail as others have already does so. But Duane, fall into and out of love very easily and this is the case in this short book. A race is run, a beautiful lady is the jockey, shots are fired and it all comes together as usual.
It has been fun to follow these different characters in this series and see how they develop. I wish the books were a little longer but that is my problem. They will hold you attention, are well written and will see what the next one in the series is about before purchase. But if you like a short story with some action while holding your attention then I think you would like this series.
