Miles McTavish, 15, is undersized and inoffensive. He likes old bicycles, new music, and (don’t say it too loud), model railroading. As the only child of wealthy Dallas executives, it appears that a life of trustafarian ease is his birthright. All those expectations are upended, however, the day he is summoned to the hospital bed of his friend (and fellow English three-speed enthusiast), Morgan Davies. Professor Davies has a secret to share he once was a time traveler. He also has a task for his young friend Miles is to travel back in time to 1928, and across the sea to England. Once there, he is to find “a girl with a gift, a girl born out of her time” and a “secret that was not meant to be” and then return home with them both. Miles must first find the courage to pass through the strange portal in the Vermont woods that will launch him on this mission, and then to face down a series of do-or-die crises (including a crisis of confidence). He must also navigate the low-tech, class-bound world of England in 1928 while keeping his true identity a secret. Miles' quest for the girl and the secret carries him from a great estate in England's beautiful countryside to London's jazz-age cabarets, and from terrified boy to heroic young man.

I am not normally a reader of young-adult literature, but I met Kim online and when I read her intelligent and well phrased comments on several issues of concern to both of us, I decided to check out her writing. I'm glad I did.I am giving this novel four stars in the debut-novel category (I believe Bill Kinsella once said there should be two categories for writers: the minor leagues and the pro leagues, and I agree with him on this). Up, Back and Away is an auspicious beginning to what I am sure will be a substantial writing career. It is an intriguing tale of a 15-year-old boy who cycles through a port in time, leaving Northern Vermont in 2012 and ending up in the English countryside in 1928. He's been sent on a mission by an older friend of his, Professor Morgan Davies, and when he had accomplished the mission he will be able to return to present-day America and his family.
Time travel is always interesting to read about, as the traveller learns about the strange country in which he or she has ended up, and Up, Back and Away fulfils its promise in this area very well. In addition to carrying out the requests of Professor Davies, Miles is challenged by the need to hide his true identity while simultaneously learning about the time and place in which he finds himself. As far as I can tell, Velk has done her research well, and she presents us with a convincing world populated by an interesting cast of characters.
As she did in our online exchanges, Kim Velk here writes with clarity and confidence, and the editing of the book is commendable. Among the myriad self-published books by first-time writers, many of which are horrible, it is a pleasure to find in this book a novel that meets the standards of many professional publications.

Up Back and Away K Velk 9781481873475 Books Reviews
What an awesome story! I can't believe it's a first novel, BRAVO!! What a wonderful story and so well written. This book grabs you from page one and never lets go! So richly detailed with beautifully developed characters. I loved the time travel aspect and the way the main character grows throughout the story. The story ending was great. I absolutely loved this book and couldn't put it down. I look forward to future books by this author
The beginning left me wanting. Some additional lead up to the time travel activity would have been good.
The middle kept me interested even though there were some parts that made me scratch my head. Would a teenage boy really do that? It would have been better if the character did it this way. Etc.
The end was disappointing. I wanted to see how the girl managed with her new life. If there is a sequel I will buy it.
What an amazingly awesome book! Such a good beginning for this author! Miles' good fortune almost runs out several times, but as luck would have it...well, you'll just have to read it for yourself. Any negative reviews you may have read alongside mine, you must ignore; the are written by fuddy-duddies not willing to fully experience the genre for what it is! I'm 45 and loved it!
This was a terrific adventure story that kept me reading it until the end, and then wishing for more.
At first, it felt like I had missed some explanations, like maybe this was already book two and I still wonder about a prequel.
My only real complaint is that I yearned for more details to compare and contrast the different times. Only passing thought was given to the lack of zippers in pants and deodorant. Describing those details is what allows the reader to put themselves in the story and try to imagine how they might have felt and acted under similar circumstances. (Read Jack Finney's novels for perfect examples. Even his short stories create the mood for the reader, leaving the thought that, "Maybe, just maybe, it's possible..."
Nonetheless, the story was fun and the twists were surprising.
I really enjoyed reading this book - it was interesting and engaging. I really wanted to see what would happen next. However, I felt the ending was very abrupt and left too many loose ends. After going through the adventure, you wanted to participate in the payoff, and that did not happen. I would love another chapter to talk about what happened to the people left in the past. With the internet, I'm sure Miles could have found out what happened to at least SOME of them. And you really wanted to be there when the Professor got information on "the secret." It was very frustrating and ended to abruptly, with no resolution or satisfaction. The book itself was enjoyable, but too loaded with extraneous details you assumed would end up being important to the plot eventually and weren't. Would read another book by this author, but would hope the next one cleaned up some of these issues...
It is nice to find out that literature like that is still written in this day and age. Between my 10th and 15th year of age I was a 'sucker' for stories like this one - I am an avid reader. Now I am in my mid-fifties, and still enjoy having that kind of reading at hand for "those idle days".
Although the hero of the story loves bicycles this book is not about cycling or even a cycling tour description... the old Royal Sunbeam is merely a vehicle to get him in and out of the time warp. The rest is about being a 21st century youngster arriving in an earlier (and in many ways less complicated) time and society of late 1920s England, and having some exciting adventures there. Well, I don't want to take the fun away telling more, only so much I recommend this book to readers of all ages, but especially the young ones.
